Special
Olympics is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities
for individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit,
productive, and respected members of society through sports training and
competition.
In 2004, a team from Nanaimo represented B.C. at the Special Olympics
National Winter Games in Prince Edward Island. This year (2005-06)
qualifications will be held for the 2007 Provincial Winter Games.
Time: Every Thursday afternoon between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM during the months
of October to March at the Nanaimo Curling Club.
Fee: Costs are covered by general registration and weekly ice time is
provided free by the Nanaimo Curling Club. There will be additional fees for
travel to competitions.
We
are currently able to offer this program to 16 athletes. The support of the
Nanaimo Curling Club would allow us to grow further but only with more
coaches.
If you are interested in finding out more about this program (as a volunteer
or to enroll an athlete) contact Ron Kaneen at 758-0173 or rgkaneen@shaw.ca.
