About Us

The Nanaimo Curling Club has a fine tradition of community involvement since 1947.  Today NCC offers regular league play in men’s, women’s, mixed, play for people of all ages – from 9 to 99.  We also have leagues and programs that are tailored to youth (school program, juniors) and athletes with special challenges (wheelchair, Special Olympics and visually impaired).

The facilities of the club are also available to any group on a rental basis (subject to the availability of ice) with qualified instructors in attendance.

Activities and Programs

Juniors

Our junior program runs on Mondays and Thursdays from October to early March.  Emphasis is on sportsmanship, etiquette, goal setting, technical skills and team dynamics.  Competitive and recreational opportunities exist for athletes of all levels and interest.  All coaches are qualified under the NCCP and CurlBC programs.

School Program

NCC offers a program that introduces young students to a life long sport.  We believe that physical activity is a critical part of every child’s education.  Curling lessons offered through the school program cover not only the fundamentals of a curling delivery, but also place an emphasis on etiquette and fair play.  Three or four 1-hour sessions are usually scheduled with the students playing a game on the last day.

Special Olympics

The Nanaimo Special Olympics is proud to be associated with the NCC.  The program has produced teams that have advanced to the National Winter games.  This program provides an opportunity for these athletes to improve their motor functions.  Social time is a very important part of the program as well.

Wheelchair

In 2008 the NCC was proud to introduce a wheelchair curling program.  The building is in the process of being transformed into a fully accessible facility with the addition of an elevator to provide access to all 3 floors.  A ramp is installed to provide access to the ice surface.

Seniors

Senior’s curling is a large component of the activities in the building.  Leagues are available for Ladies, Mixed and Men with skill levels ranging from beginner to competitive.  Seniors leagues operate primarily during the mornings and afternoons.

Adult

Adult leagues are available every evening for Men, Ladies, Mixed and Open teams.  Individuals may register and the league reps do their best to find a team for each interested player.

Novice

Beginners are always welcome.  NCC offers an introduction to curling in late September after which the individual may sign up to participate in a novice league.  This league is run by a qualified coach who will provide both off-ice and on-ice mentoring.

In January, the participants are encouraged to join the Training League where 2 novice curlers are paired with 2 experienced curlers.  This will accelerate their advancement quickly.

Coaching

NCC is often used by CurlBC to host courses related to coaching and on-ice instruction.  The club is proud to have several qualified coaches/instructors available.  We are planning to offer programs to improve your game through personal coaching sessions.

Outside Groups

In past years the NCC has been privileged to make the facilities available to community organizations such as the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Diabetes Association.  The facility has also been used in support of broader activities such as the Summer Games.

Businesses and trade associations may also have access to the building for on-ice or off-ice events.  These can be arranged through our Manager.

Special Events

In January of 2010 the NCC will host the BC Provincial championships for the Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s Playdowns.  The winners will advance to the National championships.

Become Involved

Last year this facility had over 800 people involved in league curling (occupying nearly 1400 spots).  With the school program, special rentals by community groups and bonspiels over 4000 people will pass through the doors.
